Vote for CIANA in District 22 Participatory Budgeting

Writer: CIANACIANA

Calling Astoria residents! If you live in City Council District 22 (represented by Council Member Tiffany Cabán), you have until Sunday, April 6 to vote for CIANA in this year’s cycle of Participatory Budgeting.

Participatory Budgeting (PB) is a process in which ordinary community members decide how $1 million from the New York City budget is spent in their City Council district on projects to improve their community. These can be capital projects, such as major construction or renovations, or expense projects that provide programs, services, or events. This year's project proposals are listed here:

This year, CIANA proposed an expense project to hold pop-up health clinics throughout District 22, which includes much of Astoria, including Ditmars-Steinway, as well as parts of East Elmhurst and Woodside. We are thrilled that our proposal was included on this year’s final ballot!

CIANA’s proposed Monthly Pop-Up Health Clinics will provide general health screenings and provide social services based on community members’ individual physical and mental health needs. Our idea recognizes that low-income communities of color, including many immigrant communities, face particular long-standing health equity gaps that CIANA aims to close.

CIANA’s proposal to hold in-person afterschool homework help at our office was a winning project in last year’s PB cycle, and has had incredible success this academic year. We hope the community votes for CIANA again this year to expand our education to the greater Astoria population, and to include matters of public health for individuals of all ages.

Anyone ages 11 and up who lives, works, or attends school in District 22 is eligible to vote, regardless of immigration status.

Voting is incredibly easy and takes just a few minutes. Click here or scan the QR code below to view all of this year’s proposed projects, and vote for those that are most important to you. The winners will be announced later this spring, and will start to be implemented in the summer.

There will also be several opportunities to vote in-person throughout the district, as well as all week at Council Member Cabán’s office (31st Street between 30th and 31st Avenues).

Voting takes place from Saturday, March 29 through Sunday, April 6. Participatory Budgeting is one of the most hands-on ways to participate in the city budget process, so don’t miss out!
